According to a detailed investigation by Anthropic, a small team of likely freelance developers in Russia utilized the AI chatbot Claude to build software for an autonomous swarm of kamikaze attack drones. These drones were programmed for terminal guidance, target selection, and coordination with one another, enabling them to independently identify targets and crash into them without human intervention.
The development focused on repeatedly targeting locations in Ukraine’s Donetsk region via drones, using VPNs to bypass Anthropic’s geographic restrictions. The use of small drones has become a central tactical element in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
AI-Driven Cyberattacks on Ukrainian Officials
Anthropic also documented increasing use of AI in cyberattacks against Ukrainian government, military, and diplomatic officials. A hacking group linked to the Russian threat actor Midnight Blizzard reportedly carried out phishing campaigns, hotel Wi-Fi hijackings, and WhatsApp takeovers, employing AI at nearly every stage of these operations. This group reportedly leveraged AI-enabled malware that automatically detects when it is flagged by security defenses and modifies its code to evade detection continuously.

The report coincides with intensified attacks in Kyiv, where jet-powered Russian drones struck petrol stations operated by the state-owned Ukrnafta company, resulting in casualties and injuries. These attacks mark a heightened phase of bombardment targeting infrastructure vital to Ukraine’s energy and logistics.
