Ukraine’s leader highlighted a recent surge in Russian attacks targeting the country’s energy infrastructure, warning that these assaults aim to cut off electricity and heating as winter nears. According to his statements on social media, more than 15 critical power generation and transmission sites across different regions were hit in one of the largest attacks since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

He emphasized the urgent restoration efforts underway involving all available resources from Ukrainian energy companies and stressed the strategic intent behind Russia’s campaign: to leave millions of Ukrainians without power and heating during the cold season. The calls for increased international pressure on Russia have grown amid these aggressive strikes.

Expanded Attacks and Targeted Sites

The Russian Defense Ministry reported overnight strikes on several Ukrainian infrastructure targets, including an electricity substation in the city of Zhytomyr to the northwest. The ministry also claimed damaging hits on two steel plants in Kryvyi Rih and Zaporizhzhia, locations linked to Ukraine’s military-industrial complex.

Ukrainian officials noted casualties resulting from a Russian airstrike in southern Kherson, including the death of an ambulance driver and injuries to 19 others. Additionally, a Ukrainian drone strike reportedly caused one death and injuries in Russia’s Belgorod region, as reported by Russian state news.

Response to U.S. Sanctions Waiver

In the context of these attacks, Ukraine’s leader criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent decision to waive a set of sanctions targeting Russia’s energy revenues. He expressed concern that this waiver, which delayed the implementation of measures scheduled to take effect, would embolden Russian leadership to continue its offensive actions.

The move received recognition from a Russian presidential envoy, describing the waiver as a significant event that could mitigate economic harm domestically and in global markets. The decision came amid increasing criticism from the former U.S. President toward Ukraine’s leadership, fueling speculation about shifting alignments in the conflict.
