A bridge crossing Kyiv’s Dnipro River sustained damage during a Russian airstrike on Saturday, aggravating traffic disruptions in the Ukrainian capital. Vitali Klitschko reported that emergency services responded promptly, and traffic across the Northern Bridge, connecting the east and west banks, was suspended due to harm to the road surface and overhead trolleybus cables. No casualties were reported from this attack.
The strike occurred a day after another bridge in Kyiv, linking two parts of the city, was targeted in Russia’s consecutive assaults. An evening drone attack on the closed Southern Bridge was part of a series of strikes since Thursday, forcing full or partial closures on the Southern Bridge and two others spanning the Dnipro River, causing long traffic jams during commuting hours.
Escalation Amid Russian Air Campaign Changes
The recent intensification of strikes on Kyiv’s critical infrastructure appears linked to a September directive by Vladimir Putin that removed previous restrictions on Russian air operations, a senior Ukrainian official said. Approximately 500,000 commuters travel daily from the Dnipro’s left bank to the right bank, underscoring the significant impact of these disruptions.
Elsewhere, a deadly drone strike on Friday hit an apartment building’s upper floors, resulting in one death and two injuries, while a separate guided bomb attack in Kharkiv killed two people and wounded 32. Kyiv faces one of its most challenging periods since the war’s onset as Russian assaults continue to disrupt daily life and threaten to push the city into darkness.
Humanitarian Concerns and Reconstruction Efforts
Humanitarian conditions in Russian-occupied Ukrainian towns like Oleshky have become dire, with civilians reported to be trapped without access to essential supplies including food, medicine, and clean water. European officials condemned the situation as unacceptable. Meanwhile, a joint U.S.-Ukrainian reconstruction fund secured its first major minerals deal worth about $30 million, aiming to support sectors including minerals, defense, energy, and infrastructure development.
