One person has died and 102 others have been rescued following the disappearance of the Indonesian passenger ferry Virgo Transport 8 in the Java Sea, officials confirmed. The ferry was carrying a total of 243 people when it encountered severe weather, causing a loss of contact early Sunday morning.
The vessel was en route from Surabaya to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan and was last tracked approximately 150 kilometers south of Banjarmasin around 2:00 a.m. local time. Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, in coordination with the navy, maritime police, and other agencies, launched a joint task force to conduct rescue operations in the area.
Ongoing Search and Rescue Operation
Authorities received a distress signal at 4:10 a.m. from the ferry operator PT Virgo. In response, ships and a helicopter were dispatched while all vessels in the vicinity were alerted to assist with the search. An operations post was established at Trisakti Port to coordinate efforts.
Despite the rescue of 102 survivors, searches continue for the remaining passengers whose whereabouts are still unknown. Family members of passengers have gathered at ports, seeking news and updates, including residents from Banjarmasin whose relatives were aboard the ferry. One relative shared that the group had initially traveled by plane to Java to visit Islamic scholars’ tombs before attempting the return journey by ship.

Among those rescued was Ahmad Supandi, a freight driver, whose survival brought relief to his wife. Meanwhile, relatives of crew members await news, with some fearing for loved ones’ safety as communication remains limited. One crew member’s family reported their last contact was two days prior, with no updates since the ferry’s departure.
