Before becoming the scream queen we all know and love thanks to Ti West’s X, Pearl, and MaXXXine, Mia Goth was quietly carving out a name for herself in movies like A Cure For Wellness, Suspiria, and Emma. She’s currently starring in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, but followers of the British actress would also do well to check out a forgotten post-apocalyptic thriller Goth starred in a little over a decade ago that’s set to resurface on free streaming next month.

Mia Goth’s Minimalist Post-Apocalyptic Thriller Is Not To Be Missed

Premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2015, The Survivalist stars Goth as Milja, a compassionate young woman whose moral compass remains fixed on true north, despite living in a world decimated by a catastrophic global population collapse. Receiving a limited theatrical release, the movie grossed just shy of $57,000 worldwide, but did earn Goth a British Independent Film Award nomination for Most Promising Newcomer.

Also starring Martin McCann and Olwen Fouéré, The Survivalist takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where food and resources are more than scarce. Still, despite all the hardships, a man simply known as “the Survivalist” (McCann) has managed to make a home for himself deep in the woods, protecting his land with traps, alarms, and ruthless vigilance.

His life of isolation is upended when a woman named Kathryn (Fouéré) and her daughter (Goth) arrive starving and seeking food. Sadly, they have nothing to barter with, so Kathryn offers up Milja in exchange for simple necessities. The Survivalist reluctantly accepts, but as the months pass, shifting loyalties, jealousy, and fear begin to erode their fragile coexistence.

With no explanation of what caused the global catastrophe and minimal dialogue, The Survivalist might not seem like much on the surface, but it’s a tremendous movie with moments of sudden violence that feel extremely real. Critics agree, as it holds a near-perfect Certified Fresh score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and has been called everything from “original and stunning” to “eerie and masterful.”

‘The Survivalist’ Returns to Free Streaming Next Month

Currently behind a paywall on AMC+ in the United States, all that will change on Aug. 1 when The Survivalist makes its way back to free streaming. That means it will cost nothing but a few ad breaks to watch what is undoubtedly one of Goth’s finest performances before she hit it big with the X trilogy.

Per Tubi, The Survivalist is being added to their library of free movies next month, along with a host of other great films. In addition to Goth’s post-apocalyptic survival thriller, you can also check out favorites like Zodiac, the entire Lethal Weapon and Rush Hour franchises, Eyes Wide Shut, and Mission: Impossible, completely free of charge.

You can catch Goth starring now in The Odyssey, which opened nationwide this weekend, and look for her to appear next year in the highly anticipated Star Wars: Starfighter alongside Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, Aaron Pierre, and Amy Adams. The next chapter in the storied space opera franchise is slated to be released on May 28, 2027.
