The European Space Agency (ESA) has successfully launched two satellites aimed at enhancing climate and environmental monitoring. The Vega-C rocket carrying the Sentinel-3C and Flex satellites lifted off from the Kourou space center in French Guiana, placing both spacecraft into sun-synchronous orbit within two hours of liftoff.

These satellites are designed to provide critical data for understanding and responding to climate change and extreme weather events. The Flex satellite focuses on vegetation health by measuring faint fluorescence emitted during photosynthesis, which indicates how effectively plants convert sunlight and carbon dioxide into energy. This information will help scientists assess the impact of heat waves on ecosystems over a planned three-year mission.

Flex Satellite’s Role in Monitoring Plant Health

The Flex (Fluorescence Explorer) satellite aims to offer detailed data on how heat stress affects vegetation by tracking fluorescence signals from plants. By orbiting Earth 14 times daily and revisiting locations every 27 days, Flex will help evaluate plant health, ecosystem productivity, and environmental stress, key factors in understanding climate change effects.

Sentinel-3C’s Focus on Oceans and Land

The Sentinel-3C satellite will gather data on marine conditions including ocean temperature, wave height, and currents, as well as monitor land use and cover. This satellite forms part of Copernicus, the Earth observation program under the European Union’s space efforts, and aims to support food security by optimizing agricultural yields.
