Netherlands duo Cody Gakpo and Virgil Van Dijk have joined up with Liverpool in Chicago to begin their pre-season work after taking a brief (and mandated) holiday following the World Cup. Ryan Gravenberch had previously rejoined the squad.

Van Dijk seems to have truly lived it up on his short holiday, featuring in many a fashion spread — including at Wimbledon.

The Dutch national team had something of a disappointing World Cup, going out to Morocco on penalties following a lackluster display in the Round of 32. Given the strength of their stars, Oranje would have hoped for a deeper run in the competition, though the North African side’s progression to the quarter finals reminds us that they were no lightweights.

New head coach Andoni Iraola will be pleased to have his captain in pre-season training, as Van Dijk’s presence will certainly be key to the spine of the side learning the new boss’ approach.

The Reds will take on Wrexham in New York on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, though it’s unclear how much game time the newly returned senior squad members will get.
