Apple unveiled its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, during its annual product launch event less than two weeks after John Ternus assumed the company’s top role. The new device marks the largest design change to the iPhone in nearly 20 years and introduces a book-style folding format inspired by the iPad.

Starting at $2,000 and reaching up to $3,200, the iPhone Duo is Apple’s most expensive smartphone yet. When unfolded, it resembles a small iPad, while folded, it takes the form of a wider iPhone. Ternus emphasized that the design aims to avoid the pitfalls of other foldable phones on the market, which he described as “two phones stuck together,” leading to compromised user experiences.

Design Innovation and Strategic Leadership

The foldable iPhone has been in development at Apple for several years and involved direct input from Ternus, who previously held a senior position in Apple’s hardware division. His appointment as the company’s leader earlier this year was widely interpreted as a strategic move aligned with this significant product launch.

Ternus described the foldable functionality as “fluid and completely intuitive,” calling the iPhone Duo a result of remarkable innovations intended to redefine foldable phone usage.

Market Challenges and Pricing Considerations

While the iPhone Duo represents a clear shift in Apple’s smartphone design, analysts remain cautious about its market impact. Dipanjan Chatterjee from Forrester noted the foldable could become a premium-priced status symbol without driving substantial growth, comparing it to Apple’s Vision Pro headset, which has struggled despite its high price point.

Ben Wood, chief analyst at technology research firm FDM, highlighted that foldable phones currently hold just 2% of the smartphone market globally, projecting that even with Apple’s entry, this share might only rise to 4% over the next decade.

Context Within Apple’s Product Line

The iPhone continues to be Apple’s best-selling product, historically generating more than half of the company’s revenue. Concurrent with the foldable launch, Apple also introduced the iPhone 18 and 18 Pro, priced starting at $1,200 and $1,300 respectively, emphasizing the premium tier of their smartphone range.

The introduction of the foldable iPhone represents Apple’s response to calls for significant innovation since the original iPhone release in 2007. Whether it will replicate the mass market success of the core iPhone or follow the niche appeal of other high-priced Apple products remains to be seen.
