The Ukrainian government announced that Starlink and its military counterpart, Starshield, have resumed functioning at their normal speeds after a period of significant limitations. Official statements from Ukraine’s defense sector confirm that satellite broadband connections are now stable and running at over 400 kilometers per hour, a considerable improvement from the reduced speeds experienced recently.
The restoration of bandwidth is considered critical for Ukraine’s frontline logistics and defense systems, especially in countering drone attacks. Ukrainian officials highlighted that the reduced speeds during the prior week had impaired their military operations, including the interception of Russian jet-powered Shahed drones.
Impact of the Speed Restrictions on Ukrainian Defense
Starlink’s bandwidth caps, which had limited speeds to 160 kilometers per hour, posed challenges for Ukraine’s military effectiveness. The slowdown hindered timely communication and interception abilities, forcing some operations to be canceled. Ukrainian leadership stressed the importance of returning to pre-restriction speeds to sustain defense measures against ongoing threats.
Unclear Origins of the Restrictions
The software limitations on Starlink and Starshield were reportedly implemented without clear authorization. According to reports, Starlink is operated by SpaceX, linked to Elon Musk, who has ties to former U.S. President Donald Trump. U.S. officials suggested Musk might have acted independently, though Musk later stated that any speed or usage limits were directed by the U.S. military and ultimately approved by the President of the United States.
Conflicting statements followed with denials from Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth rejecting Pentagon involvement in ordering the slowdown. The situation prompted Ukrainian officials to reconsider the level of U.S. support, particularly concerning intelligence sharing, amid suspicions about Washington’s possible role in enforcing restrictions.
Context of U.S.-Ukraine Relations
The Starlink speed limitation occurred during a period of tension between Ukraine and the U.S., triggered partly by reports of a U.S. deal with Moscow on diesel imports, which Ukraine considered a betrayal. These developments have led to speculation about the motivations behind the curtailment of the network speeds critical to Ukrainian defense efforts.
