Ukraine’s military announced it has regained a stable connection to the Starlink satellite communications network, restoring vital capabilities 10 days after restrictions significantly limited its use.
The restrictions, which capped terminal speeds at about 99 mph, hindered Ukrainian combat operations, including intercepting Russian attack drones and striking behind enemy lines. The sudden curbs led to operational failures and left Ukraine vulnerable to missile attacks without advance U.S. warning.
Dispute Over Cause and Responsibility
The service is owned by SpaceX but managed by the U.S. government, leading to conflicting accounts about who imposed the speed limits. SpaceX chief Elon Musk accused the Ukrainian military of violating Starlink’s terms by using the system for offensive drone strikes. Musk indicated that a loophole was closed to prevent Starlink’s use in offensive operations.
However, officials including Ukrainian presidential adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov denied Ukraine used Starlink for such attacks. Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump denied involvement in restricting services, though tensions arose as a U.S. deal to purchase Russian diesel coincided with the curbs.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that decisions about Starlink and Starshield—military systems using Starlink technology—are made independently by SpaceX and the U.S. government, not directed by the president.
Political Reactions and Restoration
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attributed speed restrictions both to the U.S. government and SpaceX, describing the decision as deliberate and warning it would increase human losses. In a recent Telegram address, Zelenskyy thanked U.S. allies for resolving the issues, confirming that Starlink and Starshield resumed full operations at required speeds.
Trump, who also expressed gratitude to Musk, said he would speak with the SpaceX chief if problems persist but emphasized Musk’s brilliance and character. U.S. Vice President JD Vance supported Musk’s stance that he was following U.S. government directives as the conflict involves state actors.
Importance of Starlink to Ukraine
Starlink terminals have proven critical to Ukraine’s front-line logistics and defense against Russian drones such as the jet-powered Shaheds. The restoration of full service is expected to enhance Ukraine’s operational capabilities amid ongoing conflict challenges.
