The world waits with baited breath to know: will Timothée Chalamet ever Wonk again? A recent Variety cover story said “nah,” but both the subject of the profile and Warner Bros. dispute that claim. Simon Farnaby, who wrote Wonka 1, is quoted as saying a sequel is “delayed indefinitely.” The reason for this indefinite delay seems to be Chalamet. “He wants to do [a sequel], but he’s not sure about timing or what he wants to do next,” Farnaby said. But the next paragraph has a Warner rep saying “Reports suggesting a Wonka 2 delay are entirely false. The Wonka creative team is hard at work on the next chapter.”
Farnaby took to social media to get everything completely un-twisted. “My quotes were taken little out of context by some people,” he wrote on Twitter. “I 100% did not say Wonka 2 wasn’t happening. A sequel was always the plan. Everyone is working really hard on it. WB are committed. There is a great script by Paul and I. Timmy wants to do it (like I said!) it’s just about working out schedules and making sure it’s as fantastic as we know it can be – and these things take a little time.”
Speaking of things taking a little time, Simon Farnaby’s own career points to how twisty and turny things can get in the biz. He started as one of many hip faces filling out the world of The Mighty Boosh, before becoming a beloved children’s TV creator with Horrible Histories, then a sitcom star with Ghosts. Then Paddington, then Wonka. Let him cook the chocolate on his own schedule, is what we’re saying.
