Six Killed and Over a Dozen Injured in Kraków Shooting, Police Say

Six people have died and at least 15 others were injured after a gunman began shooting at random near Kraków’s main square, a popular tourist spot. The attacker was wounded and detained by police during a confrontation, according to official statements.

Among the injured are police officers, with reports indicating that one officer’s injuries were serious. The assailant was armed with a licensed AR-15 rifle and wore military-style clothing, police reported. Several additional weapons were found in the attacker’s vehicle.

Details of the Attack and Investigation

The shooting occurred near Slawkowska Street in Kraków’s main square when the gunman fired from a passing car. The attacker was identified as a Polish national with no military affiliation, as confirmed by the country’s defense minister who refuted earlier rumors that he was a soldier.

Local witnesses described sudden shots fired from the driver’s side window, causing people to seek shelter or flee. Emergency services responded promptly, and authorities declared a period of mourning in Kraków until Wednesday.

Official Responses and Ongoing Inquiry

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk extended condolences to the victims’ families and praised the courage of police officers who confronted the shooter. He emphasized that all circumstances of the attack are under thorough investigation and urged against political exploitation of the tragedy.

Regional authorities confirmed that 12 of the wounded are in life-threatening condition. The head of the national security bureau has been dispatched to the city to assist with the investigation.
