A 14-year-old student in Thailand taught himself how to use firearms by watching violent content on social media before carrying out a deadly shooting that left eight people dead and himself among the victims, police officials revealed.
The tragedy unfolded in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok, where the teenager killed his grandparents at home using a handgun owned by his grandfather before opening fire at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, a prestigious secondary school branch. The rampage resulted in multiple fatalities among teachers, students, and family members.
Senior police official Atthapol Anusit told reporters that the investigation has so far involved questioning 17 witnesses as authorities seek to understand the motives behind the shooting and the boy’s behavior.
Social media exposure and personal issues cited as possible factors
In addition to learning firearms operation through online violent content, authorities believe the teenager’s feelings of anxiety over schoolwork, family conflicts, and problems with friends may have contributed to the attack. Examination of the teen’s home computer confirmed access to violent material on social media platforms.
Although forensic analysis indicated that the gunshots were accurate, hitting vital areas on victims, police found no evidence that the boy practiced shooting at a firearms range. However, a teacher had previously confiscated a BB gun the student ordered online and brought to school.
Family and school community react to tragedy
The teen had lived with his grandparents since his parents separated when he was two. His mother described him as a “bright, cheerful person” who appeared to behave normally before the incident. She expressed devastation over the events, saying no one anticipated such violence.
School staff viewed the boy as a good student with strong grades, and education officials noted he was an avid gamer. Local media reported that the boy’s father publicly apologized for his son’s actions.

Thai leaders have pledged to enact stricter gun control laws in response to what is considered the deadliest shooting in the country in recent years. Community members have mourned the victims, including a 12-year-old girl who succumbed to injuries two days after the attack. Hundreds gathered in black at a temple funeral to remember her, with teachers recalling her love for dancing and activities.
