Germany’s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt warned that hybrid warfare has become a daily threat to the country. This statement came after authorities discovered a drone loaded with explosives at Leipzig/Halle Airport, underscoring the evolving security challenges Germany faces.
Dobrindt emphasized that while Germany is not officially at war, it regularly confronts hybrid warfare tactics such as espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, and covert foreign operations aimed at destabilizing the country or causing harm. The government is intensifying research into drone technology to better defend against these threats.
Drone Incidents Near Military Sites Raise Concerns
Just days before the Leipzig airport incident, two drones were detected over a German military base in Mechernich, located near the Belgian border in North Rhine-Westphalia. This base includes personnel responsible for maintaining U.S. Patriot air defense systems, which play a significant role in protecting Ukraine against Russian aerial attacks.
Leipzig Drone Attack Called a Hybrid Attack Scenario
The drone carrying explosives found at Leipzig/Halle Airport was described by Dobrindt as part of a hybrid attack scenario. Although German officials have not publicly assigned blame for this event, some lawmakers have suggested Russian involvement due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. The Russian Embassy in Berlin denied any responsibility and dismissed the drone incident as a fabricated provocation lacking evidence.
Advancing Drone Security Research in Response
To address the rising threats posed by drones, Germany plans to establish a new drone security research center at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) test airport in Saxony-Anhalt later in August. This initiative reflects the country’s commitment to enhancing its defenses against modern hybrid warfare tactics.
