Wawrinka is playing a reduced schedule in what is expected to be his final season on tour, with his focus shifting away from rankings and toward enjoying the biggest stages while creating a few more memorable moments.
The three-time Grand Slam champion produced some outstanding tennis during the Australian summer, starring for Switzerland at the United Cup before reaching the third round of the Australian Open, where he took a set off Taylor Fritz.
While he hasn’t been able to consistently maintain that level throughout the season, Wawrinka has still shown flashes of his trademark brilliance, producing patches of spectacular tennis in four-set first-round defeats to Jesper de Jong at Roland Garros and Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon.
Wawrinka was in action at home in Gstaad last week, but unfortunately it was more of the same – the Swiss showcased glimpses of his best tennis, but the consistency and physicality just isn’t there. After winning the opening set in a tiebreak, Wawrinka succumbed 6-7 6-4 6-4 to Jaime Faria.
