Russian leader Vladimir Putin ordered the release of Stephen Hubbard, an American who had been jailed in Russia for more than four years. Hubbard’s release came during a meeting in St Petersburg between Putin and Steve Witkoff, an envoy associated with Donald Trump, who is engaged in diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
The move marks a rare unilateral release by Moscow rather than part of a prisoner exchange, suggesting a strategic gesture towards Trump. Hubbard, a 74-year-old former teacher, was detained on allegations of fighting as a mercenary for Ukraine.
Diplomatic exchanges and praise for Putin
After the announcement, Trump credited the release to a direct request he made to Putin the previous week. Trump stated on his social media platform that the United States did not need to make any reciprocal concessions for Hubbard’s freedom, calling the situation ‘‘unprecedented for Russia.’’
During the meeting, Witkoff commended Putin openly, referring to him as a humanitarian and expressing appreciation on Trump’s behalf for arrangements to resume Russian diesel exports to the U.S.
Ongoing tensions and peace efforts
Witkoff’s visit followed discussions in Oslo with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders, aiming to stimulate stalled talks on the Ukraine conflict, now in its fifth year since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Putin and Witkoff reportedly discussed proposals for a peace settlement, with plans for further technical-level negotiations involving the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine on security guarantees after the war. The Kremlin indicated agreement ‘‘in principle’’ to proceed with the talks.
Complex U.S.-Ukraine-Russia dynamics
Relations between Washington and Kyiv have recently deteriorated, prompted by Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Russian diesel and his calls for Zelenskyy’s resignation following Ukraine’s refusal to halt attacks on Russian energy facilities.
These strains have led to disruptions in intelligence-sharing and limitations on Ukraine’s access to Starshield, the military-grade component of Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network. Conflicting reports attribute the restrictions either to Musk himself or decisions from within the U.S. government.
Economic and geopolitical considerations
Putin emphasized prospects for strengthened economic ties with the U.S., including increased Russian fertilizer exports. A shipment of about 300,000 tons of diesel to the U.S. was scheduled for departure, though analysts question the immediate impact on American fuel supplies ahead of midterm elections.
The meeting also touched on plans for a potential trilateral summit involving Putin, Trump, and Chinese President Xi Jinping in China, described by the Kremlin as an unprecedented gathering between the three leaders.
