Chicago-area residents are being asked to delay showers and baths and wait to run the washing machine as “repeated downpours” move into the region beginning Friday afternoon.
As a result of the expected heavy rain, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago issued an Overflow Action Alert, which is intended to urge residents to reduce water use to help prevent flooding and protect water quality:
In addition to skipping showers and laundry, officials advised people across the Chicago area to flush less frequently and wait to use the dishwasher.
“Our staff is managing billions of gallons of water at our seven water reclamation plants and through our Tunnel and Reservoir Plan which is operating to protect our water environment and mitigate flooding,” MWRD President Kari K. Steele said in a news release. “We encourage everyone to conserve water when possible to create more capacity in our systems.”
The alert comes as residents prepare for heavy rain at times through Friday night and overnight, with localized flooding possible.
Showers will likely continue Saturday, with scattered rain persisting throughout the daytime and some lingering into the night. Conditions are expected to largely dry out by Sunday.
