How World Cup group stage ties are broken

The top two teams in each group automatically advance to the Round of 32, along with the eight best third-place teams. If teams finish level on points, FIFA breaks ties using the following criteria:

  1. Head-to-head results among the tied teams:

  2. Overall group-stage performance:

    • Team Conduct Score (yellow and red cards)

  3. FIFA world ranking, using the most recently published FIFA Men’s World Ranking, if teams are still level after the above criteria.
