VfL Osnabruck delivered one of the most elaborate tifo displays ever seen in German football ahead of their German Cup first-round match against Bayern Munich on Wednesday. The lower-league side showcased a rollercoaster-themed tifo at their Bremer Brücke stadium to symbolize the club’s ups and downs over the years.
The display featured a wooden rollercoaster track alongside a cart constructed from wood and styrofoam that moved continuously in front of the East Stand. The cart carried dummies and was pushed and pulled along the track, passing by a “photo station” where a flash captured and immediately projected images of the cart onto the grandstand.
Symbolism of a Rollercoaster Ride
The tifo bore the phrase “VfL Osnabruck – a rollercoaster ride!” illustrating the club’s turbulent history, including celebrated moments like a 1978 victory over Bayern Munich as well as various scandals and painful defeats. According to the club, the display represented what fans often describe as a journey full of emotional highs and lows.
The construction of the rollercoaster structure required several months of planning and was built using wooden slats, plastic piping, and fabric. Fans also recorded a special “Funpark Bremer Brücke” song to accompany the tifo during the pre-match festivities.
Match Outcome and Atmosphere
Although the tifo was removed just before kick-off, the spirited atmosphere carried on as Osnabruck shocked many by taking an early 1-0 lead within five minutes. Bayern Munich, the reigning German Cup and Bundesliga champions, eventually secured a 4-1 victory, with England captain Harry Kane scoring twice alongside goals from Tom Bischof and Michael Olise.
Osnabruck recently earned promotion to Bundesliga 2, and this impressive display highlighted both their resilience and the passionate support of their fans despite the difference in league status against the powerhouse Bayern Munich.
