Finance ministers and central bank leaders from the G20 nations convened in Asheville, North Carolina, for two days of high-stakes discussions overshadowed by controversy. The United States, currently holding the G20 presidency, welcomed Russia’s finance minister to the meeting, sparking unease among European delegates and highlighting growing discord over press access and geopolitical conflicts.

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov’s unexpected attendance marked the first in-person Russian invitation since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. He met bilaterally with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who reportedly reiterated that economic relief for Russia hinges on ending the ongoing conflict.

European Delegates Voice Strong Opposition to Russia’s Presence

Germany’s Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil expressed concern over Russia’s participation, stating it sent a “troubling signal.” European officials collectively declined to join Russia in the traditional G20 family photo with the media. The picture was eventually taken without Siluanov and away from press coverage. Polish Finance Minister Andrzej Domanski acknowledged the host nation’s right to invite guests but criticized Russia’s representation due to mistrust, emphasizing the difficulty in engaging Russia in dialogue.

Press Access Disputed as Major US Media Outlets Are Excluded

The summit also faced criticism concerning restricted media coverage. Bloomberg News disclosed its team was denied access, and both the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times reported that typical journalist credentials were withheld for the event. Klingbeil criticized the exclusions, asserting that the press’s right to free and open reporting on the summit is legitimate and that barring journalists or entire editorial teams is unacceptable.

Regional Conflicts and Trade Disputes Add Strain to Summit Talks

Another significant issue was the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Klingbeil criticized what he described as an “irresponsible” US war in Iran, calling for its end. Meanwhile, Bessent sought to rally support for “Operation Economic Outcast,” a US-led plan aimed at intensifying sanctions on Iran by pressuring its remaining trading partners. Bessent suggested the economic impact could compel Iran’s regime to reconsider its actions within weeks or months.

Trade tensions between the US and Canada also created friction at the summit. Recent tariff impositions and President Trump’s unexpected change of Lake Ontario’s designation raised concerns. Canada’s Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to constructive dialogue and economic stability despite recent disagreements.
