US authorities have arrested far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos at New Orleans International Airport for overstaying his visa, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The British provocateur was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Thursday and is currently awaiting deportation proceedings.
The arrest follows a final removal order issued by an Immigration Judge on July 22, after Yiannopoulos failed to appear at his immigration hearing. He remains in ICE custody as the agency prepares to carry out his deportation. Family members and legal representatives have been directed to contact the ICE office in Alexandria, Louisiana, which coordinates deportations on international flights.
Milo Yiannopoulos first gained prominence as a right-wing commentator and writer, noted for his involvement with Breitbart News in the early 2010s. His career includes controversial activity such as leading an anti-feminist harassment campaign known as “Gamergate.” He resigned from Breitbart in 2017 following the resurfacing of a video in which he appeared to condone pedophilia, although he later apologized for the remarks.
Background and Immigration Violation
Yiannopoulos was identified by ICE as an “illegal alien from the United Kingdom.” He reportedly ignored previous legal attempts to resolve his immigration status, culminating in the removal order. The arrest highlights ongoing immigration enforcement that extends beyond alleged threats and includes visa compliance.
Connections and Political Activity
Previously a supporter of Donald Trump’s immigration policies and enforcement agency ICE, Yiannopoulos has since distanced himself from the Trump movement. He has advocated far-right views, including calls for stopping immigration and enacting mass deportations. In 2022, he suggested California implement ICE checkpoints at public locations with immediate deportations for undocumented individuals.
Additionally, TMZ reported that Yiannopoulos’s presence in New Orleans may have been related to an upcoming event involving Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West. Yiannopoulos has worked with Ye in various roles, including on a short-lived 2024 presidential campaign, at the Yeezy fashion label, and most recently as a personal spokesperson.
Reaction From Far-Right Activists
Far-right activist Laura Loomer, who actively reports on individuals at odds with former political figures, took credit for alerting authorities. She posted on X (formerly Twitter) that she reported Yiannopoulos to ICE and the FBI, citing his illegal status and previous incitement against political figures.
