A missile attack on a bus in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk killed at least 30 people and injured 18 others, officials said, marking one of the deadliest attacks on civilians this year amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

The Donetsk regional prosecutor’s office reported that an aerial bomb struck the bus at around 10 a.m. local time on Thursday. Authorities subsequently suspended all local public transportation in response to the attack.

Devastating Impact on Civilians

Police images documented the scene, showing bodies scattered on streets filled with debris and the charred remains of the bus. Officials also confirmed a second bus caught fire during the strike, which targeted an area beside a dental clinic on Yuvileina Street in Kramatorsk. Additionally, shelling in the nearby village of Bilenke resulted in three deaths.

Ukraine’s leader stated the Kremlin deliberately attacked a “normal public transport stop,” emphasizing that some victims could not be identified due to severe injuries. He warned the death toll might rise as medical teams continue to treat the wounded.

Official Statements and Global Reactions

“This strike will not go unanswered,” the Ukrainian president said, accusing Russia of attempting to destroy all life in the Donbas region and calling for a firm international response. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, visiting the area with the Ukrainian leader, condemned the attacks as evidence of “Putin’s evil intent and strategy,” accusing Russia of trying to win by terrorizing civilians.

The attack follows another deadly Russian strike on Wednesday in Pryluky, northern Chernihiv region, where a collapsed apartment building killed at least 22 people, including five children.

Strategic Context and Military Developments

Kramatorsk and nearby Sloviansk remain key cities under Ukrainian control in northern Donetsk, forming part of a strategic “fortress belt.” Russian forces have sought to capture these cities for years. The area houses thousands of civilians and military personnel, with defenses primarily against drones offering limited protection against aerial bombs.

Regional officials accused Russia of intentionally targeting civilians to inflict maximum suffering. The Donetsk governor called the targeting of a passenger-filled bus an “attractive target” for Russian forces seeking to maximize casualties.

Urgent Calls for Enhanced Support

Amid sustained Russian missile and drone attacks, Ukraine’s president urged Western allies to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses with anti-ballistic weaponry and ammunition. He highlighted planned discussions with partners to secure critical military support.

In addition, the Ukrainian leader requested expanded Starlink satellite internet coverage from the United States to enable strikes against Russian launch sites, a proposal reportedly resisted by former U.S. President Donald Trump and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.
