Manchester City’s latest summer signings have arrived with a strong desire to win, according to new team captain Ruben Dias. The club’s captain praised the new players and the existing squad for embracing the vision of manager Enzo Maresca, who took over after Pep Guardiola stepped down.
Since joining from Benfica in 2020, Dias has been a key leadership figure at City. This season, he has been officially appointed captain under Maresca, who was previously Guardiola’s assistant. Dias emphasized that the squad’s mentality remains focused on success despite significant changes during the transfer window.
Major squad overhaul and leadership shift
Manchester City set a Premier League record by spending £458 million in the recent transfer window, bringing in midfielders Enzo Fernandez, Elliot Anderson, and Ayyoub Bouaddi. At the same time, the club recouped over £300 million by selling players, including the departure of experienced stars such as Rodri, Bernardo Silva, and John Stones.
The team has also undergone a managerial change with Maresca replacing Guardiola, who led City for a decade. Dias described Guardiola’s exit as a challenging moment for the club but expressed confidence in Maresca’s familiarity with the team and his suitability for the role.
Commitment to winning and fresh ambition
Dias acknowledged the loss of many accomplished players but highlighted the arrival of ambitious newcomers keen to contribute to the club’s success. “People that are desperate to win, and that is what makes the club keep on going,” he said. He also noted how senior players and staff, including Maresca, serve as role models by clearly demonstrating the keys to success.
The team’s strong start this season, with four consecutive wins across the Premier League and Champions League, underscores the effectiveness of the new approach and the players’ commitment to Maresca’s ideas. Dias pointed out noticeable changes in training and tactical details but praised the overall clarity and enthusiasm within the squad.
Veteran presence amid a transitioning squad
As one of the longest-serving players at City, Dias has amassed over 250 appearances, winning multiple Premier League titles, the Champions League, and FA Cups. He is among the few remaining members of City’s 2023 treble-winning squad, alongside Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, and Rico Lewis.
Despite being nearly 30, Dias expressed excitement about the new challenge with the club, including playing alongside many new teammates. He renewed his contract through 2029 last summer and is focused on maintaining his ambition and consistency at the highest level.
