Patrick Cantlay might have gotten into the clubhouse with the lowest score (64) of any afternoon player at the Rocket Classic on Thursday but it was Michael Brennan who stole the show with a birdie blitz that saw him challenge a Tour record.
Brennan faced some early adversity at Detroit Golf Club, bogeying the third and fourth holes.

The 24-year-old responded with a string of eight consecutive birdies to skyrocket up the leaderboard and move inside the top 5 during his back nine. A bogey at the par-4 17th sent him back down but only two spots. He pared the final hole to card an 5-under 65 and sits T-6 entering Friday’s second round.
Brennan extended the streak to eight with a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-4 13th. A ninth birdie could not be found at No. 14 as Brennan putted in for par.
The Wake Forest alum became the first player on the PGA Tour with eight straight birdies or better since Matt McCarty’s final round at the 2025 Baycurrent Classic.

Nine consecutive birdies is the Tour record, shared by Mark Calcavecchia (2009 RBC Canadian Open) and Kevin Chappell (2019 Military Tribute at Greenbrier).
Brennan, who is playing in his fifth straight event, ranks 106th in FedExCup points. He finished T-24 at TPC Twin Cities a week ago, good for his third finish inside the top 25 this year.
He sits four shots off Peter Malnati’s lead after 18 holes. Cantlay is T-4 alongside Patrick Fishburn.
Rickie Fowler and Ryan Gerard are T-2, two shots back from Malnati.
