CJP Leaders Das and Ranka Released from Tihar Jail with Conditions
Leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, were released from Tihar Jail on Wednesday after agreeing not to organize protests at the Jantar Mantar protest site. Their release came after a Special Executive Magistrate denied police requests to extend their judicial custody by three days.
Das and Ranka have been prominent figures in protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged voter-list irregularities. The two leaders provided personal bonds and sureties totaling 50,000 rupees each, promising to maintain peace and refrain from protests until the site is officially denotified.
Background of the Protests
The protests led by the CJP have focused on alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, including the deletion of more than 130 million names nationwide. The CJP leaders were initially detained on charges of trespassing after entering Jantar Mantar and raising the Indian flag there, an area that Delhi Police had officially denotified earlier in October following sustained protests that led to political resignations.
Political Context and Related Developments
These protests come amid heightened political tension as opposition parties challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s electoral victories. Senior opposition figures have accused electoral authorities of enabling “vote theft,” while government spokespersons have alleged opposition links to foreign groups aiming to destabilize institutions.
Conditions of Release
The leaders’ release is conditional on their commitment to not call for protests at Jantar Mantar until it is legally denotified. This development reflects law enforcement’s effort to maintain public order while addressing political dissent through legal channels.
