Authorities arrested 34 people following a fatal shootout early Tuesday in the Dutch village of Overasselt near the German border. The incident left one man dead and prompted police to warn residents to stay indoors as the investigation continues.
The clash involved heavily armed men wearing balaclavas who fired shots at a house around 4 a.m., resulting in the death of a 51-year-old man identified as a security guard. Two officers responding to the scene were also injured but sustained non-life-threatening wounds, officials said.

Police seized multiple weapons, data storage devices, and vehicles during the raids connected to the investigation. Those arrested include French, Belgian, Algerian, and Dutch nationals, reflecting the international nature of the group involved, according to deputy chief prosecutor Monique Vinkesteijn.
Charges against the detainees range from murder and manslaughter to conspiracy related to kidnapping, with authorities indicating further arrests could occur as the situation develops.
Links to Dutch Drug Underworld
Local media reports suggest the shootout is linked to the criminal enterprises of infamous Dutch drug lord Jos Leijdekkers, also known as Bolle Jos. Leijdekkers has a history of convictions for cocaine trafficking and currently resides in Sierra Leone, where he is reportedly involved with the daughter of the country’s president.
The Het Parool newspaper reported the violence may be connected to a dispute over a large shipment of cocaine trafficked by Leijdekkers’ organization. Officials confirmed that a shooting related to a prolonged conflict also took place at the same house last year.

Local mayor Joerie Minses described the events as shocking and unacceptable, stating that the violence crosses all boundaries and does not reflect Dutch societal norms. Police continue their investigation while maintaining a strong presence in the village to ensure public safety.
