Water levels in the Rhine River, Germany’s critical industrial waterway, have reached record lows, sparking severe disruptions to river traffic and raising concerns over supply chain and production challenges for key industries. According to Germany’s Economic Institute, the drop in cargo shipping capacity on the Rhine, which links industrial regions across Europe with North Sea ports, is already impacting production, particularly in sectors reliant on bulk goods like ore, chemicals, and coal.
This situation results from prolonged drought conditions and frequent heat waves attributed in part to human-driven climate change. River gauges at critical monitoring points, such as Kaub on the Middle Rhine, have reported unprecedented lows far below previous historic records.
Significance of the Rhine for European Transport
The Rhine River has been a vital transport artery since Roman times. It serves as the main route for certain heavy cargo shipments between German industrial hubs and major ports like Rotterdam. Although only about 10% of Germany’s freight tonnage travels via inland waterways, the types of goods transported are essential for industrial production.
With water levels so low that vessels can carry only about 20% of their usual loads, companies face increased transportation costs and logistical bottlenecks. The German Economic Institute warns that the Rhine may effectively be split by impassable sections south of Kaub, forcing industries to reduce output due to an inability to secure timely deliveries.

Water depth in the Rhine is measured at strategic gauges known as pegels. At Kaub, the current measurement registered just 16 centimeters—well below its previous low of 25 centimeters in 2018. Actual navigable depth is slightly higher, but the drop presents a critical limit for commercial shipping.
Industry representatives confirm that the shortfalls in shipping capacity are already affecting production schedules. Attempts to compensate by shifting freight to road transport offer limited relief, as cargo ships can carry the equivalent of about 60 trucks, making a full transition infeasible.
