Vintage and DarkMago of PlayTime are currently suspended from the Dota 2 Esports World Cup due to an integrity investigation.
The Dota 2 Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026 Survival Stage has been thrown into limbo after two members of South American team
PlayTime were provisionally suspended amid an ongoing integrity investigation. The individuals involved are the team’s sporting director, Juan “Vintage” David Angulo Nicho, and mid laner Gonzalo “DarkMago” Herrera.
PlayTime were scheduled to face
Vici Gaming in a Survival Stage series last night, but the match was indefinitely postponed after tournament organisers announced that an “integrity issue was identified and referred for review”.
Hours later, the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC), the integrity partner for EWC 2026, confirmed that it had launched an investigation into “suspected breaches of the ESIC Anti-Corruption Code and Player Code of Conduct”, specifically naming Vintage and DarkMago.
Both individuals are currently “prohibited from participating, directly or indirectly, in EWC 2026 and all ESIC Member events while the investigation remains ongoing”. However, ESIC emphasised that “no final determination of guilt has been made” at this stage.
What happened to the Vici Gaming vs PlayTime match?
The Dota 2 EWC kicked off its first round of the Survival Stage yesterday, on 14 July. However, the day’s final series between Vici Gaming and PlayTime was postponed after tournament organisers flagged an integrity issue, indicating potential concerns involving cheating, misconduct, or other actions that could compromise the competition’s integrity.
While the announcement remained vague for several hours, ESIC released a full statement earlier this morning confirming that Vintage and DarkMago had been issued provisional suspensions and were the subjects of the ongoing investigation.
With both individuals barred from competing while the investigation is underway, the Vici Gaming vs PlayTime series remains on hold. As a result, the Survival Stage cannot proceed without a winner from the match.
Under the original schedule, the series was due to take place on 14 July, with the final round following on 15 July–beginning several hours from now. It remains unclear how the Dota 2 EWC schedule will be affected by the delay.
UPDATE: According to the EWC website, PlayTime have forfeited their match against Vici Gaming and have been eliminated from the tournament. Meanwhile, Vici Gaming advance to the final round of the Survival Stage and will face 1w Team.
Why are the PlayTime members temporarily suspended?
Vintage and DarkMago have both been placed under provisional suspension, preventing them from participating in EWC 2026 and all ESIC Member events. In addition, Vintage has been barred from carrying out any coaching and management duties or other “support functions” connected to participating teams or players in the event.
ESIC explained the reason for the decision in the following statement:
“The provisional suspensions have been imposed following ESIC’s preliminary assessment of information concerning suspected breaches of the ESIC Anti-Corruption Code and Player Code of Conduct.
The measures are protective and precautionary. They are intended to safeguard the integrity of the competition, preserve relevant evidence and support the fair and effective conduct of ESIC’s investigation.”
ESIC emphasised that these measures are purely interim and do not constitute a finding of wrongdoing. At this stage, neither Vintage nor DarkMago has been found guilty of any offence.
A look at PlayTime and how the team qualified for the Dota 2 EWC
PlayTime is a relatively new organisation in the Dota 2 scene, formed as part of Philippines-based online gambling platform’s efforts to reach a wider audience through esports. It entered the game’s competitive circuit in January 2026 by acquiring a star-studded Southeast Asian roster featuring players such as Kim Villafuerte “Gabbi” Santos and
Armel Paul “Armel” Tabios. However, after a brief and underwhelming stint, the organisation released the lineup in March before signing the former Peruvian
paiN Gaming roster in May.
The move quickly paid off. With the new roster, PlayTime secured a Top 6 finish at DreamLeague Season 29, earning enough points to qualify directly for the Dota 2 Esports World Cup. The team narrowly made it through the Group Stage to reach the Survival Stage. However, the ongoing integrity investigation involving two of the team’s members have affected their campaign, as the EWC website confirms the team’s forfeit, ultimately sending them out of the tournament in 13th-16th place.
