South Africa experienced two deadly mass shootings within hours of each other, resulting in at least 27 fatalities and multiple injuries. The attacks occurred near Johannesburg and Cape Town, highlighting the country’s ongoing struggle with gun violence linked to gang conflicts and illegal mining activities.
In the Johannesburg area, eight gunmen attacked a bar on Saturday evening, killing 17 people—comprising 13 men and four women—and injuring 15 others. The assailants opened fire on customers outside before continuing inside the venue, where they also set fire to two vehicles before fleeing. According to Gauteng Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Tommy Mthombeni, victims included people from Ethiopia and Lesotho, but the majority were South African nationals.
Possible Motives and Investigation Details
Authorities are considering robbery and turf wars between illegal mining gangs as potential motives for the Johannesburg attack. Personal belongings were reportedly stolen during the assault. Illegal mining remains a serious issue in South Africa, often involving undocumented migrant workers recruited by organized crime groups. Deputy Provincial Police Commissioner Maj. Gen. Fred Kekana suggested the shooting could be retaliation for an incident last month that left one person dead and another injured.
Separate Shooting Near Cape Town
In a separate incident in the early hours of Sunday, 10 people were killed and 11 injured after gunmen opened fire outside an entertainment venue in a township near Cape Town. Five victims died at the scene, and five others succumbed to injuries in the hospital. No arrests had been made in either case as of Sunday morning.
Context and Ongoing Violence
These shootings come just days after 11 people were killed during a similar attack in Durban. South Africa faces one of the highest murder rates globally, with about 60 murders reported daily nationwide. The persistent gun violence is frequently connected to gang turf wars involving drug trafficking and illegal mining operations. Earlier this year, military forces were deployed alongside police in high-crime areas to curb armed violence. Additionally, the discovery of a tenth woman’s body in Ekurhuleni to the east of Johannesburg has led police to consider the possibility of a serial killer in that region.
