
Eight individuals, primarily employees of the airport operator Fraport, have contracted malaria in the vicinity of Frankfurt Airport since July, with three of those cases resulting in death. Health officials attribute the outbreak to airport malaria, a rare condition where infected female Anopheles mosquitoes travel by aircraft from regions where malaria is common to countries where it is not, subsequently infecting local individuals.
Understanding Airport Malaria
Airport malaria occurs when an infected Anopheles mosquito carrying the Plasmodium falciparum parasite survives transport by airplane and bites a person, transmitting the disease. This form of malaria, known as malaria tropica, is the most dangerous type and can cause life-threatening complications by blocking small blood vessels in vital organs.
Symptoms initially mimic those of the flu, including sudden high fever, chills, headaches, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If untreated, malaria tropica has a mortality rate of approximately 20%, according to Institute for Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology at Bonn’s University Hospital.
Health Authorities’ Response and Guidance
The Frankfurt Public Health Department advises residents and workers near the airport to seek immediate medical attention if they experience flu-like symptoms. Rapid diagnostic tests can detect malaria parasites in the blood, with confirmation through blood tests. Treatment should be provided in hospitals experienced with tropical diseases.
Experts emphasize that while airport malaria remains a very rare occurrence in Germany, vigilance is critical, especially as the incubation period for Plasmodium falciparum ranges from seven to 15 days. The recent cases mark the first known cluster since 2023, underscoring the importance of considering malaria even in patients without recent travel history.
Transmission Factors and Seasonal Outlook
Besides traveling mosquitoes via aircraft, these insects may survive in warmer zones within airport facilities. Cooler temperatures approaching the end of summer in Germany are reducing favorable conditions for mosquito survival and transmission. However, experts caution that more cases could still emerge due to the incubation period of the parasite.
