Polish police reported receiving intelligence about a potential plot aimed at attacking Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. Officials described the threats as highly probable and are treating the situation with utmost seriousness.
The information emerged after an emergency meeting involving security services, police, and the interior ministry on Sunday. Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for the minister supervising Poland’s intelligence agencies, confirmed that the state protection service initially received the intelligence, which then was passed on to the police. Details about the origin and nature of the threat remain undisclosed.
Heightened Security Amid Rising Threats
The alert follows a week marked by a series of violent stabbings at schools in the Mazovia province, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries, including children. These incidents have amplified concerns about the overall security climate in Poland.
Dobrzyński noted that Polish security services are experiencing a growing number of threats each month, underscoring the increasing challenges faced by the nation’s law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
Government Response and Context
Adam Szłapka, government spokesperson, indicated that Prime Minister Tusk became aware of the “exceptionally concerning” threat early Sunday morning. Tusk has previously warned about the likelihood of intensified hybrid attacks by Russia targeting NATO’s eastern flank, including Poland, as a strategy to undermine Western support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Moscow.
The prime minister suggested that such attacks could involve drones or rocket strikes against European countries backing Ukraine. However, Russia has denied any involvement or plans related to these allegations.
Maintaining Vigilance
Poland remains on high alert as authorities continue to monitor potential threats and strengthen protective measures for key government officials and institutions. The government’s proactive approach aims to deter any attacks that could destabilize national security during a period of regional tension and violence.
