Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional monarch of Uganda’s Tooro kingdom and recognized as the world’s youngest reigning king, has died at the age of 34. Born April 16, 1992, King Oyo was the second child of his predecessor, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. His unusual start as a ‘‘boy king’’ captured global interest, including from notable figures such as Moammar Gadhafi. Oyo completed part of his education in the United Kingdom at Winchester University. In 2015, he faced a royal challenge from a cousin claiming the throne but retained his position.
Throughout his reign, King Oyo was known for his passion for sports, especially football, and his support for causes like HIV prevention, environmental conservation, tourism, and climate change awareness. In 2022, he undertook a hiking expedition in Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains to highlight tourism opportunities and environmental challenges. Prior to his death, reports indicated he had been seriously ill and was receiving treatment in the United States.
