Fans hoping for a quick return to Arendelle may need to bundle up with patience. While promoting his new film Adulthood alongside Alex Winter at TIFF 2025, Josh Gad sat down with Collider’s Steve Weintraub and revealed that Disney’s much-anticipated Frozen 3 and Frozen 4 are still a ways off. When asked whether he’d begun work on the next film, Gad admitted:
“We have not started recording. We have not heard songs yet. I was lucky enough to get sort of a preview of what the movie is, and it’s going to be worth the wait. It’s pretty extraordinary what they’re doing. Pretty extraordinary. For me, my whole thing was don’t do a sequel unless there’s a reason to do a sequel. If you have a story worth telling, then call us up and let’s do it. To Jennifer Lee’s credit, she really took that note and gave herself that note and has created something that’s going to be worth the wait.”
Weintraub pressed further, pointing out that Disney had already confirmed not one but two sequels in the works. Gad replied:
“That is above my pay grade. I think the plan, what they’ve announced, is that there is a Frozen 3 and 4 in the works. The story that I’ve been kind of previewed is the grandest story we’ve ever done, so I anticipate it’s going to be a little too much for one movie.”
Weintraub speculated that with two films announced, Disney could be setting up a cliffhanger across the pair, and Gad admitted that fans might be in for a shock when they see the cliffhanger ending. Although it should be noted, we are quite confident he wasn’t being entirely serious.
“Well, when people see Olaf get assassinated, I think it’s going to raise a lot of questions that are going to have to be answered.”
What Else Do We Know About ‘Frozen’s Sequels?
This update tracks with comments made earlier this summer by Disney Animation’s Chief Creative Officer, Jared Bush, who teased at Annecy that the studio was focused on Frozen 3 first, with Frozen 4 already confirmed to be on the horizon. Bush stressed the importance of taking things one film at a time: “For me personally, I think that it’s critical to make sure that every movie we do is fantastic… One thing at a time is, to me, the best way to approach it.” With a tentative 2027 release window for Frozen 3, Gad’s remarks confirm what many had suspected: Anna (Kristen Bell), Elsa (Idina Menzel), Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), and Olaf’s next chapter is still in its formative stages. That doesn’t make the wait any easier, but as Gad reassured, “it’s going to be worth the wait.”
Frozen 3 is scheduled to release on November 24, 2027.
