The public safety response follows the outbreak of a highly aggressive wildfire in the area of Highway 82 in Brantley County near Waynesville, which grew to 1,000 acres Tuesday, the Georgia Forestry Commission said. The fire was downgraded from 75% containment to 50% containment Tuesday afternoon.
Brantley County schools will be closed Wednesday, the district announced, calling the situation a “crisis.”
“This decision has been made to ensure the safety of our students, families, and employees, and to allow our Brantley County families time and space to navigate the impacts of the fire. We know that many in our community have been directly affected, including some who have experienced the loss of their homes.”
Students at two schools in Brantley County, Georgia, were evacuated Tuesday afternoon after the fire breached containment, according to county officials. Waynesville Primary School students and Atkinson Elementary School students were relocated to the gym of Brantley County Middle School as a precautionary measure, the Brantley County School System said.
