See Jackie and Shadow’s eaglets test their wings
Jackie and Shadow’s eaglets will soon take to the skies as they test their wings inside the nest.
One of the eaglets of the famous Big Bear bald eagles, Jackie and Shadow, took a tumble on June 28, though the preservation group that monitors the family said that the young bird is likely doing well.
The Friends of Big Bear Valley said in a Facebook post that Luna jumped over Sandy to try and get back into the family’s nest at 11:24 a.m. PT. Sandy lost her footing and fell onto the branches below. Sandy fell further after freeing herself from the branches, and the organization said, “We could hear her squees.”
Jackie, the eaglet’s mother, returned “within minutes” and watched her offspring from a branch below the nest, according to the post. “Jackie and Shadow will now follow her wherever she goes and make sure she is fed and taken care of,” the post reads.
Video posted by the preservation group from a camera aimed at the nest tree showed Sandy flying out of frame.
“Sandy looked good in her flight, and she is likely relaxing from her unexpected adventure,” Friends of Big Bear Valley said. As of 1:42 p.m. PT, camera operators were searching for Sandy, according to the organization.
Earlier in the day, a Friends of Big Bear Valley blog post described the eaglets as “very active, high jumping, flapping, and sometimes getting a little lift” and told followers to “stay tuned in,” anticipating “hovering” in the coming days.
The eaglets hatched in April. They are now fully grown and able to fly, according to the blog post.
Jackie and Shadow, longtime celebrities in the small mountain community 100 miles east of Los Angeles, have developed an international following due to livestreams of their nest. As of 3:30 p.m. PT, the YouTube stream of the main Eagle Cam had over 27,000 viewers.
