Helen Haines, an independent Australian federal lawmaker, sustained serious injuries after being struck by a white Toyota SUV outside her constituency office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Authorities are investigating the incident as a suspected deliberate attack.
The 65-year-old politician suffered critical injuries, particularly to her lower body. Witnesses reported hearing a bang and then seeing a woman pinned between two vehicles. The driver, a 43-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.
Investigation and Official Responses
Local police have involved counterterrorism investigators in the probe, following findings of a knife inside the suspect’s car. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the event as an apparent intentional act rather than an accident but said it was too early to determine the motive. Albanese expressed concern about a rising climate of political violence in the country.
Victoria’s state premier, Ben Carroll, reacted with shock and emphasized the impact on the Wangaratta community and those represented by Haines. The prime minister also conveyed hopes for her full recovery.
