The Emmy nominations won’t be announced until July 8, but the race for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series has already been decided. It’s between two women: Lisa Kudrow for The Comeback and Jean Smart for Hacks. The fact that the conversation is less about whether they’ll be nominated and more about who will win speaks to the sheer strength of their performances. Nobody thinks there’s a chance either gets left out. If that happens, expect riots in Hollywood. (Led by me.)
This is a real “Sophie’s Choice” for fans, because both women carry remarkably similar narratives. Each of their shows just ended popular runs—Hacks after five seasons and The Comeback after three, spread across a 20-year period. Both women have won Emmys previously, and both are icons of television, their legacies already cemented in the history of the medium with or without another win. The question isn’t whether they belong in the conversation. The question is who takes it home.
So, it’s going to come down to love. Smart has won four consecutive Emmys for her work on Hacks, a staggering achievement that speaks for itself. Kudrow, meanwhile, has never won an Emmy for her performance as Valerie Cherish on The Comeback, despite the role being one of the most singular and daring performances in the history of television comedy. (She previously won a Supporting Actress Emmy for Friends.) The narratives couldn’t be more different yet are also oddly similar, and that contrast is exactly what makes this race so compelling.
My gut says it’s going to be Kudrow. Her narrative is stronger, and she has been doing the campaign work of someone who intends to win. How it all shakes out won’t be known until the big night, but one thing is certain: We are better off as a culture because these two performances exist. And for that, well, that makes them both winners already.
