After break causes 2-hour outage, water restored across North Chattanooga, Red Bank

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — UPDATE:

Water service was restored for customers in North Chattanooga and Red Bank after a main break near Normal Park Elementary disrupted things for close to 2 hours Monday morning.

Tennessee-American Spokeswoman Daphne Kirksey tells us in an email,

There was a main break on Mississippi Avenue and it has now been repaired. Water is being restored as we run hydrants to clear line from the air.

We’re working to learn more about a reported major water main break that’s disrupting water service Monday morning across a large section of Red Bank and North Chattanooga.

In a message texted to customers Monday morning at 8 a.m., Tennessee American Water says emergency repairs began around 7:30 a.m. and are expected to take about five hours to finish.

Customers in the affected area may experience low water pressure, discolored water, cloudy water or, in some cases, no water at all.

Based on the utility’s service map, the outage stretches across much of Red Bank and North Chattanooga, including areas north of the Tennessee River to the Lupton City neighborhood. It also appears to include the Northshore, Mountain Creek, Stuart Heights/Rivermont and Alpine Heights areas.

Once repairs are complete, Tennessee American Water says temporary water quality changes are possible.

If your water is discolored, the utility recommends running cold water from the lowest faucet in your home.

If the water appears cloudy, run cold water from the highest faucet in your home. The utility says the condition should clear after three to five minutes.

Customers are also asked to stay away from repair crews while they work.

Tennessee American Water says it appreciates customers’ patience as crews work to restore normal service.

We’ve followed up with the utility to learn where this main break is, and to learn exactly how many customers have been affected. We’ll share their response here if and when we hear back.
