Jack Wilshere has come full circle in his football career, returning to Luton Town as the club’s manager nearly a decade after beginning there as a youth player. The former Arsenal midfielder, who made 182 Premier League appearances and represented England at the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016, spoke with BBC Sport’s Kelly Somers about his transition from player to coach and his ambitions for the club.

Wilshere retired at age 30, plagued by injuries, but expressed no regrets about his career. “I loved it, I’m really proud,” he said, noting his pride in playing for England and the club he supported growing up. Now 34, Wilshere has embraced management, marking his first full-time senior role at Luton Town, where he has already won the EFL Trophy, leading the team to a 3-1 victory over Stockport County at Wembley.

Early Coaching and Influence of Mikel Arteta

Immediately after retirement, Wilshere returned to Arsenal to coach youth players and quickly realized coaching was his calling. He credited former teammate and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta as a key influence, describing how he learned to understand coaching techniques and develop training sessions during his time under Arteta’s leadership, who guided Arsenal to their first English league title in 22 years.

Wilshere also highlighted his role in nurturing young talents such as Max Dowman, Ethan Nwaneri, and Myles Lewis-Skelly, reflecting on identifying their potential early and the satisfaction of seeing them advance to the senior squad.

Approach to Management and Player Development

Wilshere emphasized his player-focused management style, shaped by his own experiences as a young professional. He acknowledged mistakes from his playing days, including previous criticisms about his lifestyle, and stressed the importance of setting clear standards while offering players second chances.

His man-management skills gained attention when a passionate half-time team talk helped Luton recover from a 3-1 deficit to a 4-3 win over Reading on the opening day of the season, a moment that went viral on social media. Wilshere believes that building trust and accountability with players is vital and said he expects hard work and clarity in every moment with the team.

Looking Ahead for Luton Town

Wilshere is focused on guiding Luton Town toward promotion to the Championship in the current season, hoping his early start in coaching will continue to benefit his managerial career. He expressed gratitude to the club’s board for giving him the opportunity despite his youth and relative inexperience.
