Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed plans to meet with former U.S. President Donald Trump in September to discuss additional air defense aid for the upcoming winter months, amid rising Russian attacks targeting fuel and civilian infrastructure.
Damage and Casualties in Kyiv and Surrounding Areas
The missile strikes caused fires, including in garages and vehicles in Kyiv’s Podilskyi district, prompting officials to urge residents to seek shelter. Multiple city districts reported damage, with some residents needing rescue from collapsed or damaged buildings. Separately, a Ukrainian attack killed one person in the Russian border town of Starodub in the Bryansk region.
Defense Support and Political Developments
In response to intensified Russian aggression, the United Kingdom announced a £100 million ($135 million) air defense package for Ukraine, including Patriot missile systems that can counter Russian ballistic missiles like the Iskander and Kinzhal. The package will also provide artillery rounds and drones to support Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
The aid commitment coincides with a strategic meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, involving around 50 countries, co-chaired by the UK and Germany. These efforts seek to bolster Kyiv’s resilience as the conflict appears set to continue through winter.
Resignation of Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Amid Corruption Investigation
Adding to the complex situation, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko resigned after anti-corruption agencies raided his office. Authorities allege a corruption network within the Prosecutor General’s Office linked to bribery and money laundering, though Kravchenko denied involvement. His resignation was described as a conscious political decision to prevent his office from becoming part of political disputes.

The ceasefire, initiated to facilitate diplomatic talks in Moscow and Kyiv, concluded with renewed strikes signaling the resumption of hostilities.
