US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner conducted talks in Kyiv on Sunday following their meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Despite the diplomatic engagement, no breakthrough was achieved to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The visit marked the envoys’ first official trip to Ukraine amid the conflict, with their arrival by train from Poland due to Ukraine’s closed airspace. Putin declared a three-day ceasefire to ensure their safety during the Moscow discussions.
Diplomatic Talks in Kyiv and Moscow
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held three rounds of discussions with Witkoff and Kushner, the final round joined by national security advisers from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. The talks centered on military assistance, including requests for Patriot missile systems and other weaponry Ukraine requires for the coming months.
Zelenskyy emphasized the necessity of a significant support package, dubbing it a ‘winter package,’ given the ongoing nature of the conflict. He expressed appreciation for the presence of European representatives in Kyiv, underlining a united front.
US Efforts and Russian Response
Kushner acknowledged the complexity of negotiating peace, stating the US was working behind the scenes to create conditions conducive to a potential deal. He noted the challenges involved but expressed a commitment to trying.
Following their Moscow meeting with Putin, no specific agreements were announced. Putin’s foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, described the talks as constructive and useful but did not disclose concrete outcomes. Discussions also touched on economic topics and potential large-scale projects between Russia and the US.
Continuing Conflict and Security Concerns
The conflict has intensified in recent months, with Ukraine seeking strong security guarantees from European allies and the US to deter further Russian aggression. Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Kyrylo Budanov, indicated the fighting is unlikely to end before spring 2027 and warned of escalating Russian air strikes.
Both sides continue strategic attacks: Russia focusing on conquering the Donbas region and targeting Ukraine’s capital with drones, and Ukraine targeting Russia’s energy sector and internal infrastructure.
