The 39-year-old Argentine icon made the decision shortly after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, marking the end of an illustrious international career.
Messi led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title in Qatar, their first since 1986, and finished as the second top scorer of the 2026 tournament with eight goals, narrowly behind France’s Kylian Mbappe.
Reflecting on an Illustrious Career
With 207 appearances and 125 goals for Argentina, Messi holds the records for the most games played and goals scored for his national team. During his tenure as captain, Argentina also won the Copa America twice, in 2021 and 2024.
Messi expressed that the choice to retire hurt deeply, but he recognized it was the proper time to step away. He shared on Instagram that he wished to bring joy to Argentine fans and make them proud through football, leaving with a sense of peace and pride along with his teammates.
Legacy and Club Career
Although retiring from international football, Messi continues his club career with Inter Miami, where he is contracted through the end of the 2028 MLS season. He joined the U.S. club in 2023 after stints at Paris Saint-Germain and a legendary 15-year tenure at Barcelona.
Messi has previously voiced doubts about how much longer he will play professionally, especially following the loss of his father earlier this year.
