The World Cup knockout stage just keeps delivering — and Wednesday may have been the most thrilling day yet with drama and controversy in all three Round of 32 matchups.
The U.S. men’s national team took center stage in the late game against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it was a frenetic end to the day. Folarin Balogun put the Americans up just before halftime but was given a questionable red card in the 64th minute — forcing the U.S. to play the final 30-plus minutes with 10 men. The Americans held strong though, keeping Bosnia and Herzegovina scoreless and even adding a late goal on a beautiful free kick by Malik Tillman.

England kicked things off early in the day with a thriller against DR Congo. After an early goal by Congo’s Brian Cipenga put England on its heels, the Three Lions battled back and Harry Kane was the hero yet again. The English talisman leveled the match in the 75th minute with a header, then gave his team the win on a twisting strike in the 86th minute.
In the afternoon matchup, Senegal had Belgium on the ropes with two goals in the first 51 minutes of the game. The Red Devils rallied though, getting some late magic from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans to send the game to extra time. A controversial penalty kick was awarded to Belgium in the dying embers of the game and Tielemans drilled it for a 3-2 win.

The United States had to play over a half hour with a one-man disadvantage. But things got a lot easier thanks to Malik Tillman’s free-kick goal.
Just look at this thing of beauty that all-but-ensured the United States would be moving on to the Round of 16.

Balogun became the first player since Zinedane Zidane in the 2006 World Cup final to score a goal and get a red card in the same World Cup game with this foul.
It was a clear yellow. But it wasn’t called a red on the field — or even a yellow — until VAR intervened and asked the referee to take a look. It appeared accidental, but that clearly wasn’t enough to keep Balogun on the field.

Folarin Balogun scored twice on Wednesday night, but his first goal was called back for offside.
His second was not, however, and it gave the United States a 1-0 lead.

The USMNT took down Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 on Wednesday night and will face Belgium in the Round of 16 on Monday.
The U.S. will be playing for its first quarterfinal appearance since 2002.
However, the win came at a cost. Striker Folarin Balogun got a second-half red card and will miss the match against Belgium.

Youri Tielemans completes the Belgium comeback.
The Red Devils, down 2-0, scored in the 86th and 89th minute to force extra time. In 125th minute, Belgium drew a penalty and Tielemans stepped up and beat Mory Diaw to secure a place in the Round of 16.
Belgium will now face either the USMNT or Bosnia and Hezegovina on July 6 in Seattle.

This is huge, and the Senegalese players are actively arguing the call.
After a brief scrum, Pathé Ciss ends up on the ground. Pure chaos right now.

Youri Tielemans went down in the box after a hard challenge from Lamine Camara, with the feet of the two getting tangled right as Tielemans would have received the ball.
Camara is already on a yellow, but the more important issue is whether this is a late penalty kick as stoppage time begins.

Dodi Lukébakio takes a shot off an excellent ball in, but it hits the top of the crossbar. So close to sealing this win for Belgium.
There are now three bodies on the ground, two Belgian and one Senegalese.

Bara Sapoko Ndiaye takes a shot from out long, but Thibaut Courtois is able to dive for it. Three saves this game for the Belgian keeper.

Diego Moreira gets on the unlucky end of a challenge from Krépin Diatta, with the two getting a bit of head-to-head contact. Moreira is assessed for a potential concussion, but appears to be fine — which is extra good, since Belgium is out of subs.

After some risky early substitutions in the second half, Rudi Garcia waited to use the added sub for the extra time window. But now, in the 109th minute, Leandro Trossard comes out for Amadou Onana.

The Lions of Teranga are starting to turn up the pressure. After one missed chance, Ibrahim Mbaye takes another shot, but sends it wide. The movement is there for Senegal, and the ideas are there, but they haven’t been able to get that final touch.

Shortly before the whistle is blown for the end of the first period of extra time, Nicolas Raskin gets a big cross into the box for Belgium, but it misses both Thomas Meunier and Leandro Trossard on its way out of bounds.
“Se-ne-gal” chants began again in earnest across one end of the stadium, but it’s been a pretty sleepy extra time period so far. 15 more minutes coming back up.

Two close calls in a row for Belgium, first with Leandro Trossard crashing the box and then the same from Romelu Lukaku, who just misses his second touch. Mory Diaw is able to secure the ball in both cases.

Just a few minutes into extra time, Senegalese manager Pape Thiaw takes out Sadio Mané and Ismail Jakobs to give the team some fresh legs in the form of Nicolas Jackson and El Hadji Malick Diouf.
One minute later, Thiaw uses the team’s final sub — with each team getting an additional sub for extra time — to take out Idrissa Gueye and bring on Bara Sapoko Ndiaye.
