The Emergency Service of the Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín hospital has commenced expansion works, resulting in the temporary distribution of patients in hallways and passageways, including designated teaching classrooms. The hospital has apologized for the inconvenience caused.

This week, some patients were located in the corridor connecting the service to Radiology, separated by screens and exposed to direct sunlight through large windows, causing heat discomfort. Despite this, the hospital assures that healthcare activity remains normal, attending to around 300 patients daily, although increased healthcare pressure has been noted recently due to the medical strike.

A patient reported that some individuals had been waiting over four days for a hospitalization bed, although the healthcare center indicates that waiting numbers are often surpassed. The hospital management acknowledges the necessity of reorganizing non-habitual spaces for healthcare provision due to the ongoing works.

These works, with an investment of 790,000 euros, will increase the care capacity by 47 new posts, bringing the total to 157 patient spaces. The expansion will add 552 square meters to the Emergency area, aiming to address the rising demand. The works are expected to be completed before the end of the year.

The new space will feature an area for beds and chairs, waiting rooms for patients and families, medical and nursing consultation rooms, a specific zone for psychiatric and geriatric emergencies, as well as medication and information areas. It will also include expanded access doors to the Emergency department and a new short-stay area. The construction is being carried out in a space provisionally set up earlier this year.
