Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark keeps finding her way into the record books. On Thursday, Clark hit her 500th career assist during the Fever’s game against the Golden State Valkyries, tallying another landmark after hitting 1,000 career points earlier this season.

Clark becomes the fastest player in WNBA history to reach that milestone, achieving it in just 59 games. The next closest was Sue Bird, who hit that mark in 82 games.

That 500th assist came about halfway through the second quarter, off a long dime to Sophie Cunningham. Clark had hit 1,000 points during the Fever’s season opener, a narrow loss to the Dallas Wings.

The Valkyries held off the Fever for most of the first half, going up by double digits. But a late run in the second quarter brought Indiana back from the deficit to tie things up at 44-44 heading into halftime.

The game stayed incredibly close from there, with Indiana briefly holding a seven-point lead, the biggest lead of the half, before the Valkyries came right back. Golden State retook the lead in the final few minutes, and then had to push against the Fever to hold that margin.

With 16 seconds remaining, Gabby Williams hit one of two free throws, giving the Valkyries a very narrow two-point lead. That left Indiana with a chance to win or tie with 0.6 seconds left on the clock. After the in-bound, Aliyah Boston had a look to send the game to overtime, but it went wide of the basket.

Valkyries guard Veronica Burton ended with a game-high 25 points and a career-high five blocks as Golden State’s defense showed up big against the Fever. Clark, meanwhile, finished with 16 points and six assists, while rookie Raven Johnson added another 16 points off the bench as Indiana fell just short.
