SPAIN players were left baffled after having a goal ruled out during their World Cup last-32 match against Austria.
Marc Cucurella thought he had fired the reigning European champions into the lead on the half-hour mark after slamming home a corner from Lamine Yamal.
But referee Glenn Nyberg quickly disallowed it, instead awarding Austria the free-kick.
Cucurella and Yamal were among the players who were completely stunned and went over to question the decision.
It then emerged that Alexander Schlager had been impeded when the corner was crossed into the penalty area.
Spain centre-back Pau Cubarsi appeared to jump into the goalkeeper when attempting to head the ball.
That resulted in Schlager falling backwards and into his net.
Despite the contact appearing minimal, the officials and VAR deemed it enough to rule the goal out.
The BBC Sport commentary team and pundits could not mask their disbelief at the decision, with Dion Dublin saying: “I don’t think there is anything wrong with that at all.
“There is three Spain players around Alexander Schlager and he should be stronger.
“They’re allowed to stand there and jump for the ball, you don’t have to allow the goalkeeper to catch it.
“I think it is absolutely ridiculous, I think that is a perfectly legal goal.”
Presenter Kelly Cates branded it “absolutely ridiculous” while former England goalkeeper Joe Hart said: “Premier League goalkeepers will be throwing their food and drink at the TV.”
