The Los Angeles Dodgers reshaped their catching depth Tuesday, hours before Tarik Skubal was scheduled to make his Dodgers debut. Los Angeles‘ roster moves added Hunter Feduccia and Ben Rortvedt while removing two short-term options.

Those changes addressed an immediate shortage created by injuries to Will Smith and Dalton Rushing. Smith remains sidelined by a neck issue, while Rushing landed on the injured list with a right elbow injury.
The Dodgers catcher moves also restored familiarity behind the plate. Rortvedt played for Los Angeles last season and knows its staff, while Feduccia returned after spending time in the Tampa Bay Rays organization.

SportsNet’s Kirsten Watson announced the transactions on X, formerly Twitter, roughly three hours before first pitch at Wrigley Field. Watson detailed each corresponding move on the platform.

“#Dodgers added catcher Hunter Feduccia to the roster, selected the contract of catcher Ben Rortvedt, optioned catcher Eliezer Alfonzo and designated catcher Chuckie Robinson for assignment.”
Rortvedt was in the starting lineup at catcher and batted ninth vs. the Chicago Cubs. His assignment carried added importance because Skubal is making his first start since arriving from the Detroit Tigers.
Los Angeles acquired Rortvedt from the New York Mets for Chayce McDermott. In a separate deadline deal, the club reacquired Feduccia from Tampa Bay.
Meanwhile, Alfonzo returned to Triple-A Oklahoma City after providing emergency depth. Robinson lost his roster spot once Rortvedt and Feduccia became available.

The reset gives the Dodgers a more stable tandem while Smith and Rushing recover. It also gives Skubal an experienced receiver for his first appearance in Dodger blue.
Ultimately, the moves showed how quickly Los Angeles addressed an injury-driven roster problem. The Dodgers head into Tuesday on a four-game losing streak, making stability especially important for Skubal’s debut.
