Can Africa’s World Cup success continue?published at 18:42 BST
Australia v Egypt (19.00 BST)
At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, not one of Africa’s five teams made it out of the group stage. Fast forward to 2026 and of the 10 African teams, all but one made it through the group stage.
However so far only Morocco have made it to the round of 16, with Ivory Coast, South Africa, Algeria, DR Congo and Senegal all exiting in recent days.
The final three African teams in the round of 32 play today, led by Egypt here.
Only six times have African teams won a World Cup knock-out game – Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, Ghana in 2010, then Morocco three times across 2022 and 2026.
It would mean a lot to African football if Egypt can add to that tally today.
