One of the greatest strengths of The Legend of Zelda is its ability to constantly reinvent itself over and over again. From the cel-shaded sea of The Wind Waker to the dusty realism of Twilight Princess and everything in between, Zelda can be pretty much anything it wants to be.

Ever since The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild launched in 2017, Zelda has been more or less defined by what fans have come to name the “Wilds era”. The specific design of Link has carried over into the Smash Bros. games and his appearance in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and this era in Hyrule’s history has been explored in two spinoff games and a full sequel. Gamers, it would seem, are more than ready to leave behind this chapter of Zelda, and I think Nintendo is too. But not without one last goodbye.

Zelda Returns In 2026 With A Final Goodbye To The Wilds Era

I can’t say it hasn’t been special

As you may already know, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom—Secrets of the Zonai is set to release in October 2026. This is a handsome hardcover book that contains 424 pages, including art from Tears of the Kingdom, sketches, designer notes, storyboards, concept art, and other goodies.

Secrets of the Zonai also features “80 pages of Hyrule History,” set to explain the history of this specific era of Hyrule and undoubtedly cause more confusion in the process. Zelda veterans Eiji Aonuma, Hidemaro Fujibayashi, and Satoru Takizawa are all contributing to this hefty tome.

“Start your journey with Secrets of the Zonai,” reads the official product description. “Pore over 50 pages of beautiful illustrations, character art, and promotional images. Then, dive into nearly 300 pages of behind-the-scenes sketches, notes, rough designs, concept art, and recollections that provide an exclusive look at the development and creation of the game. Next, travel back to a time before the founding of the Kingdom of Hyrule, with over 80 pages of Hyrule’s history that include insights into the mysterious past of the Zonai all the way up to the events of the game.”

This official release is, we can say with confidence, one last goodbye to the era that began in The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. It’s been an incredible run with two unforgettable open-world games and two spinoffs that are absolutely well worth playing if you’re into that sort of thing. But after nearly ten years, it’s definitely time for the next mainline Zelda to embrace change. Especially if we consider the upcoming live-action movie and the brand-new look it’s giving Link.

There’s still an awful lot we don’t know about the future of Zelda. Recent leaks suggest an Ocarina Of Time remake is slated for the end of this year, while a new 2D Zelda will release in 2027. But as far as the next brand-new 3D game goes, it’s anyone’s guess.

Secrets of the Zonai looks to be a fitting way to close the book (literally) on the last ten years of Zelda, and a wonderful tribute for the series’ ongoing 40th anniversary. 2026 should be all about looking back and saying goodbye. In 2027, we can step into the future with Link and begin a brand-new adventure.
