DULUTH — A man is in custody after an incident that closed off a portion of the downtown Wednesday.
The Duluth Police Department responded Wednesday morning to a report of a man with a gun barricaded in a storage unit in the alley between Superior Street and First Street, between First and Second avenues west.
The surrounding area was closed to traffic for several hours as the department’s Crisis Negotiations Team and SWAT worked to resolve the situation.
Police announced early in the afternoon that the man surrendered peacefully and no one was injured. A 59-year-old man was arrested and taken to the St. Louis County Jail, where he is expected to be charged with second-degree assault and threats of violence, police said.
The News Tribune generally does not identify suspects until they have been formally charged.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
